This is actually one of The Few Times that I am Happy To Pay A HIGHER PRICE for an Item! I had pre ordered the One Disc DVD when it was announced on Amazon at a price of $8.99. I ordered it but was Disappointed that it seemed to be skimpy on the extras But I will take this DVD any way I can. I was Pleasantly Surprised when I was informed by Amazon that the one disc was being discontinued and that I would have too order the Two Disc Directors Cut, Didnt have to twist my arm on that one! I am more than Happy to shell out a few more dollars for an extra disc that will be loaded with Extras! This Movie Deserves the Full Treatment! Yentl is The GREATEST of ALL Barbra Streisand Films and is by far her Most Personal Film! I respect Barbra’s Professionalism and Integrity in Making Sure that This Movie Received the Proper Treatment for a DVD Release and I know it will have been worth the wait! To Me, The Ending of The Film when Yentl is on that Ship and Singing “A Piece of Sky” is one of the greatest scenes in Cinema History, Gives me Goose Bumps everytime I see it. Finally!! YENTL is on dvd! For all us Barbra fans YENTL was an amazing tour de force without comparison and as years have gone by it seemed as if Barbra had forgotten us and that it would never be released on dvd. Well, the wait was definitely worth it for it is presented here as an exquisite 2-disc Director’s Cut which far surpasses any expectations I had.
First, we get a brief intro of Barbra today talking about the film. Then there is YENTL. The video presentation is so crisp and clear it is as if it was filmed today. It shows no age whatsoever. And the music. This glorious soundtrack contains some of Bartbra’s best work beginning with PAPA CAN YOU HEAR ME. All music is glorious and all your surround speakers will be put to excellent use. The audio is strong even when there is no music. Dialogue is strong and background surround sound is plentiful.
We all know that YENTL was a cherished experience of love for Barbra and here she shares that joy with us. We get the original theatrical version of the film, an extended director’s cut with added footage from Barbra’s archives and a splendid commentary track. I usually don’t listen to these. But here Barbra explains all that was behind each scene of the movie for her. It is amazing to see how she made her decisions and what the experience was like. To see the steps she took to make her dream come true is very informative. And it does not end here. The second disc has added features aplenty. There are featurettes. We see Barbra filming while she is acting and directing at the same time. We see home movies she took during the filming. And we see some songs that didn’t make the cut of the final film.
Now I just want to address all the people who have been griping about how the dvd was originally listed at a much lower price and have anger at Amazon for any preorders being raised in price. Amazon actually does people a huge favor and lists an item when there is the slightest info on its release. The original price was based on the knowledge they had and not the final product. When the studio gave them the true retail price they listed it and when the item details were available they were listed asap. I am grateful to Amazon for letting me know a product I desire is in the works.
Now back to YENTL. Barbra has delivered and given us an amazing gift with this 2-disc Director’s Cut of YENTL and picture, sound and features are all amazing. I highly recommend this dvd not only to Barbra fans but to all fans of quality cinema. I always felt this film was underrated. Her directing here is superb as well as her exemplary acting and beautiful/expressive singing. This film is one for the history books.

Three months before the much-publicized theatrical release of United 93, the same tru-life tragedy was faithfully dramatized in Flight 93, an equally praiseworthy TV movie that was originally broadcast on the A&E network on January 30, 2006. The fourth plane to be hijacked on September 11th, 2001 – and the only plane that didn’t reach its intended terrorist target – is the riveting subject of this film, which unfolds in real-time (similar but not identical to United 93), beginning with the terrorists’ preparations and boarding of the ill-fated flight. We then follow the notorious events as they unfold, and from that moment on, it’s nearly impossible to take your eyes off the screen. The intense drama focuses on the passengers who ultimately thwarted the terrorists – they include Tom Burnett (Jeffrey Nordling), Todd Beamer (Brennan Elliot), and Mark Bingham (Ty Olsson) – but as their counter-attack plans are being made, the action also reveals the chaotic nature of the ground response, from the White House bunker (where Vice President Cheney was moved for security) to Offices of the Federal Aviation Agency, Verizon headquarters (where in-flight calls were monitored), and United Airlines flight control, where pilots and terrorists alike could be heard throughout the terrible ordeal of the hijacking.
To his credit, director Peter Markle steers clear from any sense of exploitation (it helps that there was a five-year gap between the 9/11 tragedy and this respectable film); furthermore, both Markle and screenwriter Nevin Schreiner avoid the pitfalls of melodrama by keeping the action rooted in the facts as we know them. Speculation is necessary for some of the dramatic details, but Flight 93 benefits from a well-chosen cast of unknowns, which enhances our belief in them as ordinary citizens under extraordinary circumstances. As you might expect, several scenes are inherently unforgettable (up to and including the now heroic phrase “Let’s roll!” as the counter-attack begins), and the authentically played emotions are further intensified by realistic special effects by Gary Gutierrez, who performed similarly laudable duties on The Right Stuff 23 years earlier, at the start of his visual effects career. Produced with the cooperation of surviving family members of those who perished on Flight 93, this well-made TV film handles difficult material with grace under pressure, and that alone serves as an admirable tribute to those brave passengers who gave their lives so that others could be saved. –Jeff Shannon

The Simpsons had already ruled TV land for many years by the time they finally attempted to conqur the movie world as well. It was never any big secret that a Simpsons movie was in the works: Fox registered the domain name “Simpsonsmovie.com” in 1997, a full nine years before the film was finally greenlighted. When creator/producer Matt Groening’s creation finally made it to the big screen in 2007, it only turned out to be the biggest hit of the summer, raking in over $100 million gross in box-office receipts in its first week, before heading on to do over $500 million worldwide, proving that the best joke in the movie was actually played on the audience: “Why pay for something when you can see it for free?” asks Homer at the movie’s start. Naturally, all the trouble starts with him. When he adopts a pig (”Sir Oinks-A-Lot”) destined for Krusty’s slaughterhouse, it triggers an environmental catastrophe, forcing the government to seal Springfield into a dome and destroy the city. While the family manages to escape and flee to Alaska, they eventually decide to return and help save the city in more-or-less classic Simpson fashion. As Homer’s joke about the audience shows, Groening and producer Al Jean are keenly aware that their franchise is first and foremost a TV show. Maybe a little too aware, as the movie fails to ever rise above anything more than an extended episode, and not even one of its best episodes at that. Tru, there are plenty of good jokes; the animation has been kicked up a notch to be particularly sharp and detailed; and there are some truly memorable moments such as Bart’s nude skateboard ride and the “Spider-Pig” song. But when the film finally materialized, the payoff for long years of anticipation turned out to be small as the movie failed to live up to its potential; it’s amusing but not truly funny. The Simpsons Movie leaves the impression that maybe the show’s writers and producers had already spent their best ideas on the best years of the TV show. Had it been made years earlier well, we can only wonder what could have been. –Daniel Vancini

If, 18 years ago, you had told rapper Ice Cube he’d have a hit family movie called Are We There Yet?, he would have sneered in your face. Yet here he is with that movie’s sequl, Are We Done Yet?, in which Nick Persons (Cube, Barbershop, Friday) takes his new wife Suzanne (Nia Long, Big Momma’s House) and her two cantankerous kids out to an old house in the country. Unfortunately, the house proves to have a few problems, and Nick finds himself at the mercy of a real estate agent/contractor/house inspector/midwife Chuck (John C. McGinley, Scrubs), who before long is turning Nick’s house–and his life–inside out. The script for Are We Done Yet? is based on an classic (though little remembered) Cary Grant movie, Mr. Blandings Builds His Dream House. While Cube doesn’t have Grant’s comic skills, he has grown into a comfortable and charming screen presence, and he gives this ramshackle entertainment a decent foundation. But it’s McGinley who steals the movie with his truly bizarre yet mesmerizing performance; aside from some pratfalls, Cube spends most of the movie staring in horror or astonishment at McGinley as the tall lanky white man walks a very fine line between comedy and schizophrenia. –Bret Fetzer

Rappers Pras and Ja Rule star as Diamond and Gage, drug-dealing buddies on the mean streets of New York, in this energetic but hopelessly muddled hip-hop crime thriller. You’ve seen it all before: the childhood street pals hit the crisis point when Diamond wants to go straight and hot-headed Gage aspires to become the baddest gangsta on the block. Ja Rule plays the loose cannon bad boy Gage with pent-up anger and a bullying sneer, a firecracker next to burnt-out match Pras, whose commitment-shy suffering artist has a sleepy, withdrawn blandness until he’s out on the streets. “I can’t guarantee I’ll be there for you,” Diamond lamely sputters to his pregnant girlfriend before heading back out for a night of music and gunplay, coming to life with two-fisted ferocity as he coolly empties clip after clip into rival gangs. Director-screenwriter Robert Adetuyi never worries about reconciling the two sides of Diamond, and the contradictory cliches about loyalty and responsibility are delivered without a trace of irony. The John Woo-inspired action scenes are the highlights of the film, flashy, high-energy explosions of excitement that reveal Diamond as a cool-headed, criminally sharp gangster at heart. He just doesn’t know it, and the film is too embarrassed to admit it. This glib, sense-numbing action fantasy coasts on the energy of the action and the music while having it both ways: violence without personal consequnces and decisions without repercussions. –Sean Axmaker
